About Me

My photo
Rembuden Kilbirnie Karate Club
Rembuden was started in 1968 by Sensei John Jarvis on his return from training in Japan at the Kyokushinkai Karate Honbu Dojo in Tokyo Japan. In a relatively short period of time, it grew into an International Martial Arts Association teaching initially Kyokushinkai Karate, Kendo, Jodo (short staff), and Iaido (Drawing of the sword). Then from 1976 the journey with Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate began. Sensei Jarvis retired from teaching Karate in 1987, and the Kilbirnie arm of his organisation at which he also taught at regularly, is now headed by Sensei William Young. Sensei William was a student of both Sensei Jarvis and Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Master Higaonna Morio. Okinawan Goju Ryu is taught extensively throughout New Zealand with Sensei Jarvis's original organisation now split into a number of different factions each headed by former senior students of his. Putting aside political differences, the style taught amongst them is still Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate.
